Essential Oils

Essential oils

Essential oils are powerful pharmaceutical grade plant extracts which are said to contain the essence of the plants from which they are made.  They are highly fragrant and potent combinations of natural chemical compounds.  Nature has had millions of years to perfect these oils, and some are strong medicinal compounds used in both over-the-counter and home remedies.  Indigenous peoples have always used plant extracts for medicinal purposes, and essential oils represent as pure an extract as you can find.

These oils can be expensive because each plant contains only a limited amount of oil.   How expensive can essential oils be?  Just take a quick trip to the local health food store to see the cost of three-quarters of an ounce of oil, the approximate amount of oil used in a single bottle of Anti-Bug Brew.  Because we buy in bulk, we don't have to pay retail (thank goodness), but the cost of our ingredients still requires us to charge more than some man-made products.  But we figure the price is well worth it, especially considering the health ramifications of using synthetic chemicals.

Why use essential oils?

They repel bugs, kill germs and bacteria, and they smell great.  Our formulas for Anti-Bug-Brew balance the bug-repelling properties of oils like citronella, cedar, lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, and peppermint with the fragrant properties of cinnamon, balsam fir, sweet orange, spearmint, vanilla, and others.  Formulas for Un-Stench and Triple-Threat do the same, but without the burden of having to mask the scent of the stronger bug-repelling oils.

Don't bugs like those nice scents?

Nope.  Mosquitoes don't remember the great smell of grandma's cookies baked with cinnamon and vanilla.  Neither do gnats, sand flies, or black flies. They've never had a refreshing glass of mint tea, and they certainly aren't looking for cedar or patchouli.   Bugs essentially want two things: blood and nectar.  They find blood by detecting heat, carbon dioxide, and body odors.  They find nectar by detecting flower fragrances.  But the bugs either don't care about the oils we use, as is the case with the fragrance oils, or they don't like them, as is the case with the bug repellant oils.

Do essential oils have other benefits?

Plenty.  But not all of them have been proven by exhaustive studies yet.   What we can say with accuracy is that most of the oils have antibacterial properties, and some have very useful health benefits.  To learn more about essential oils, and the individual benefits offered by each one, spend some time at the following web link:
